If you want to improve your language skills, Literacy Volunteers of Collier County offer several ways to help.  Most importantly, GET STARTED NOW!  It is never too early – or too late – to begin improving your literacy skills.  There are several ways LVCC can help you learn English:

One-on-One Tutoring

Literacy professionals agree that the most effective way to improve literacy skills is one-on-one tutoring.

Personalized in its approach, the student and the tutor collaborate to set goals with student progress assessed regularly.  Tutors prepare lesson plans for each session and meet with their students once or twice a week for a least one hour or more.  One-on-one tutoring takes place in local libraries, community centers, church facilities, educational and social service centers in Collier County as well as the LVCC offices – any place that is convenient for the student and the tutor.

All tutors are certified by ProLiteracy America, a national organization.  Using a wide-range of resource materials such as Tutor and I Speak English, our tutors are committed to teaching English to speakers of other languages and those individuals who need basic skills.

Small Group Classes

Another way to learn English is by joining small group classes.  These classroom groups can enhance one-to-one tutoring and allow students to learn from their peers in a non-threatening and welcome environment.

Small group instruction also provides a learning opportunity for those students who are waiting to be assigned a tutor as well as flexibility for students who have busy work schedules.   Classes are held both at the Literacy Volunteers of Collier County’s main office on Airport Road in Naples as well as off-site at various community centers in Collier County. 

Beginning, intermediate and upper intermediate small group instruction classes are available.  Average class sizes are between 5 and 12 students with each class running between 2-3 hours in length.  Small group classes encourage interaction among students and foster confidence and self-esteem in a dynamic learning environment.  It’s a fun way to learn and be part of a group all striving for the same goal!

ELLIS (English Language Learning Information System)

What is ELLIS?

Ellis is a computer based learning program that allows learners to build a foundation for learning language from pre literacy through a mastery level.

Its 18 lessons introduce essential concepts such as the alphabet, sound/sympbol correspondence, and sight word recognition, while developing vocabulary and literacy skills.

Whether the student is advanced or just beginning, ELLIS technology is an excellent and fun way to help students learn English. Using LVCC’s computer lab at its main office and satellite locations,  this exciting interactive computer program offers simple and easy-to-use technology to learn vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and communication. 

Students sit at their own private station, put on headphones and interact with and learn English from actors on the computer screen who act out real-life situations.  Such situations may include shopping, using public transportation, dining in a restaurant, visiting a doctor’s office, or meeting with a school official.  The program is self-guided so students can stop or repeat a scene, view the script as they are acted out, speed up or slow down the speed of the dialogue, and record and compare their voices to those of native speakers.   Every listening activity becomes a speaking opportunity.   Practice activities are also built into each learning objective.
