CHANGE A LIFE THROUGH LITERACY - BE A TUTOR!
When you become a volunteer tutor, you will help change someone’s life through literacy. But did you know that YOU will change your own life by having so much personal satisfaction and pride seeing someone learn? You will also make some great friends!
LVCC tutors are the backbone of the organization. We would not be where we are today, helping hundreds of people in Collier County learn English, without tutors. But due to our growing population, we need more people to help teach English to new immigrants and low literate adults.
It’s easy to join LVCC as a tutor volunteer. Here’s all you need to do and know:
- Be a high school graduate.
- Have a desire to help someone else learn to read, write, speak and understand English.
- Devote two or three hours a week to your student.
- Preferably commit to one-year of tutoring after training is completed.
That’s it! You do not need to have proficiency in any foreign language nor have a teaching background. All that is required is that you attend a 12 hour workshop consisting of 4 three-hour sessions. The workshops are held at the LVCC offices located at 281 Airport Road South, Naples, FL 34104.
Our tutor trainers will give you the information and guidance you need to help someone learn English. The classes are fun and interesting and will prepare you to work effectively with students of all ages and backgrounds. The tutor curriculum includes topics such as working with adult learners, learning styles of non-native speakers, the reading and writing process, vocabulary, lesson planning, goal setting, cultural differences, etc. LVCC covers the cost of the training and provides tutors with workbooks, lesson plans, and all the resources necessary to begin working with as student.
Unlike a traditional teaching environment where the teacher decides what the class will learn, tutoring is student focused. They decide LVCC’s tutoring program is focused on meeting the individual student’s goals and objectives. Tutors will meet with the student and discuss his/her goals and objectives and create lesson plans to help meet those goals.
At the end of the training period, tutors receive a Pro-Literacy Tutor Certification and are matched with a student. We attempt to pair tutors and students based on the information given us about the preferred days, timeframes, and locations for both parties. Tutors and students usually meet once or twice a week in a public place such as a library, a community building, a mall, and so forth.
They may also use the LVCC offices when space is available. In addition, tutors are assigned to a mentor to answer questions and guaranty success in the new role. About five weeks after the workshop ends, there is a follow-up session to see how things are going. The LVCC staff is always available to help tutors at anytime make this a positive and beneficial experience.
